Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

Overview of the Program

The Far North Queensland Rural Division of General Practice (FNQRDGP) Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is a comprehensive education and exercise program designed for cardiac patients recently discharged from hospital. This is funded by the Commonwealth under the MAHS (More Allied Health Services) program.

The aim of the program is to optimise physical, psychological, occupational and social recovery following an acute cardiac event within a supportive professional environment.

The program offers a supervised exercise program with educational and discussion sessions. These are aimed at increasing your understanding of heart disease and the positive action you can take in reducing risk factors, preventing future cardiac events and regain your previous level of physical activity.

The program lasts for six weeks. You will then graduate to Phase 3 of the program, 'Walk for you Heart' walks.

The Education Program

The Education Program includes sessions in the following:

  • Understanding heart disease and risk factors
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Medications
  • Stress management & relaxation
  • Cholesterol & nutrition/diet
  • Activities of daily living

The sessions are conducted by appropriately qualified health professionals. These professionals include GPs, a social worker, dietician, coronary care nurse, a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist.

The program also offers support for your spouse and family members on a weekly basis.  The group welcomes involvement of family members at all sessions.

Who should attend?

Anyone who has had a heart attack, angina, angioplasty, coronary artery bypass surgery, valve repair surgery or any other similar cardiac events, then this is for you. Bring your partner and complete this program together.

When can I attend?

Depending on your diagnosis, you may start your program whilst still an in-patient or soon after discharge. You can discuss this with your GP, physician or cardiologist. Exercise and educational sessions are held once a week.

How will I benefit from the program?

Many adjustments, including psychological ones, will take place in the first few months after your event. Through participation in cardiac rehabilitation, you will gain skills necessary to make important lifestyle changes and improve your confidence to return to exercise and recreational activities. Advice regarding return to work can also be provided.

Success in rehabilitation is based on an individual's own level of participation.

From a clinical view, people who participate in a rehabilitation program are likely to have a better quality of life and long term outcome.

How do I get started?

You should discuss the program with your GP, physician or cardiologist who will then give you a referral to attend. Once you have been referred to the program you will be contacted by the program co-ordinator to arrange attendance.

How much does it cost?

There is no cost to the participants as the Program is an initiative of the FNQ Rural Division of General Practice in association with your local Queensland Health District and funded by Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing.
